Hanukkah bingo

Hanukkah is a time to gather with loved ones, light the menorah, and indulge in latkes and sufganiyot. But why not add a little extra excitement to the festivities? Enter Hanukkah bingo—a fun and interactive game that blends tradition with a modern twist.

Whether you’re celebrating with family, organizing a classroom event, or hosting a virtual party, Hanukkah bingo is a light-hearted way to keep everyone engaged. Plus, with customizable bingo cards, you can tailor the game to include all the special moments and symbols of the holiday.

How to play Hanukkah bingo

Just like classic bingo, Hanukkah bingo involves marking off squares as you go. But instead of calling out numbers, you’ll be spotting and marking off symbols, words, or traditions related to Hanukkah.

Here’s how to get started:

1. Create your bingo cards: Customize your bingo cards with Hanukkah-themed items. Think symbols like menorahs, dreidels, gelt, and candles, or even words like “miracle,” “Shamash,” and “latkes.” You can either design your own cards or use a bingo card generator to make it easier.
2. Get ready to play: Either have a caller announce the symbols or words, or display them on a screen for everyone to see. For a more hands-on approach, incorporate objects from around the house—pull out a dreidel, or display a plate of latkes to call out the corresponding items!
3. Distribute the cards: Each player gets their own unique Hanukkah bingo card. If you’re hosting an online event, share digital versions that players can mark off on their devices.
4. Start the game: The caller reads or displays each Hanukkah-themed item, and players mark it off on their cards. The first person to complete a row, column, or diagonal calls out “Bingo!” and wins.

Easy, right? It’s the perfect activity to pair with lighting the menorah or while waiting for those latkes to crisp up.

Alternative ways to play Hanukkah bingo

Want to switch things up a bit? Here are a few creative ways to take your Hanukkah bingo game to the next level.

Interactive storytelling bingo

In this version, instead of a traditional caller, the host tells a Hanukkah story or describes Hanukkah traditions, and players mark off any related symbols or words on their cards. For example, the host might say, “When the Maccabees reclaimed the temple, they only found enough oil for one day,” and players would mark off symbols like oil, menorah, or miracle. It’s a great way to engage players in the story of Hanukkah while adding an educational twist.

Speed bingo

For a quicker game, try a speed round! The host calls out symbols or words rapidly, and players need to stay on their toes to mark off their cards in real time. It’s a fast-paced version that’s perfect for keeping the energy up during larger gatherings or with kids who may not have the longest attention spans.

Trivia bingo

Put your Hanukkah knowledge to the test! In this version, the caller gives trivia questions or fun facts about Hanukkah, and players mark off the corresponding answers on their bingo cards. For example, the caller might ask, “How many candles are on a fully lit menorah?” Players who have “9” on their card can mark it off. This is a great version for classrooms or anyone looking to learn a little more about the holiday.

Team bingo

If you’re playing with a larger group, divide players into teams and have them work together to complete their bingo cards. This version works especially well for family gatherings or virtual events where you want to encourage interaction and collaboration. Plus, it’s a fun way to get everyone involved in strategizing and laughing together!

Top tip

No bingo game is complete without prizes! To keep with the Hanukkah spirit, consider small, festive prizes like chocolate gelt, dreidels, or menorah-shaped candles. If you’re hosting a virtual game, you can opt for digital prizes like e-gift cards or special Hanukkah-themed e-cards to send to the winners.
